The excavation of overburden at the Raškovac open pit is effected through a combination of continuous and discontinuous operation.

The existing continuous excavating system (CES) has been fully rehabilitated and modernised in 2005 and 2006. The CES consists of bucket wheel excavator C-700, bandwagon BRs 1400, belt conveyor system 1400 mm, overburden spreader ARs 1400 and dragline excavator ES 5/45. In addition to the CES system, a fleet of hydraulic shovel excavators and dumper trucks is used for the removal of overburden layers.

In 2006 the overburden depositing has been modified from external to internal depositing, which substantially improves the landscape of already excavated areas and rationalises the operation costs.

The recultivation of external overburden deposit area commenced in 2005, thus significantly reducing the environmental impact.

Coal layers are excavated by hydraulic shovel excavators and transportation to the coal processing plant is done by trucks. The coal is classified in the processing plant according to size into the following classes:

  • Class 1 – 200-1200 mm
  • Class 2 – 60-120 mm
  • Class 3 – 40-80 mm
  • Class 4 – 0-40 mm

Coal transportation can be done by trucks or by railway. Apart from the above main equipment, an entire fleet of ancillary equipment is used at the mine: bulldozers, graders, pipe-layers and various kinds of off-road vehicles.
